Frequently Asked Questions

The place to go for all your burning questions

Note: this FAQ is about what Nome II does. If you want to know how to use it, check out the Support page.

BASIC USAGE

MIDI Sequencer

Can I sync my MIDI synths and sequencers?

Yes, as long as they can follow MIDI Clock, which most machines will do.

Can I start and stop them as well?

Yes, most machines following MIDI Clock will also react to MIDI Start/Stop – which means Nome II can start/stop them.

What if my sequencer gets out of sync?

This could happen over a long song with an old sequencer, or if the sequencer was not started correctly. If it happens, no need to stop and start them again, as Nome II can resync your sequencers on the next bar automatically.

Can I sync my modular synths and Eurorack modules?

Absolutely! Nome II sends 2 analog clocks, configurable from 1 to 24 ppq (pulses per quarter note), with a diverse start gate options as well.

Can I sync my vintage synth, f.ex. a TR606?

Absolutely, using a small adapter to connect the ANLG plug of Nome II to the clock input of your 606.

Can I sync my USB MIDI keyboard?

Not easily. The USB-C port of Nome II will only connect to a USB host like a computer. It’s possible that an adapter will come in the future in order to connect to a USB MIDI keyboard.

Can I sync my Teenage Engineering OP-1?

The OP-1 field can connect to Nome II directly (USB to USB), it will also give power to it. The OP-Z might work with a powered USB hub between the OP-Z and Nome, and the OP-1 will not work at all.

Can I sync anything else: Pioneer DJ, tape machine, recorder, etc.?

If you can make your device send regular audio pulses at 24ppq on a dedicated audio output, then yes you can sync Nome II to it. Nome II will then send clocks to your other equipments. Note that this is rather advanced usage and will require you to know your equipment pretty well.

I need more MIDI outputs!

Easy: get a MIDI Thru box to add many outputs. Or use the MIDI Thru port on your own device. Or get multiple Nomes (generation I or II) and sync them together.

DAWs

MIDI Keyboard, sequencer, and headphones

Can I sync my DAW to Nome II?

If your DAW is Ableton, Bitwig, Reason, or FL Studio, then yes, your DAW will follow Nome II like any other instrument. Otherwise your DAW will have to be the master, see below.

Can I get Nome II to follow my DAW?

Absolutely. In fact you can use Nome II to send clocks to your hardware sequencers, in order to record them on the grid in your DAW.

What is U-SYNC?

That’s our brand new and first of its kind syncing software, which for now is only available for Mac. U-SYNC will get Nome II and other hardware connected to it syncing to the grid in your DAW very easily and very precisely, with a simple USB cable.

Can Nome II sync to any audio?

Unfortunately no. This is called “Beat Detection” or “Tempo Following”, Nome II can only sync to 24ppq audio pulses. Firmware 4.0 coming soon will add support for syncing to any ppq from 1 to 24, which means you will be able to send for example a metronome or a “4 on the floor” kick drum beat to it.

Is my DAW supported?

All major DAWs are supported, and our plugins are available as VST3, AU, and AAX. If you are using a non-supported DAW, you can still sync Nome II to your DAW by using an audio sync track, which requires no plugin.

I have Windows, but I heard that Nome II only works with Mac?

That’s not true. On Windows you can easily sync Nome II to your DAW, sync your DAW to Nome II, send MIDI commands to Nome II, or install firmware updates. The only feature not available for Windows is U-SYNC, but we are working on it.

Can Nome II send MIDI Notes?

Nome II is like a MIDI hub, you can ask it to forward any MIDI sent over USB to one of its MIDI outputs. It will not only forward these instantly but merge them smartly with the MIDI Clock, without affecting it.

Can it forward MIDI data send from a MIDI-DIN plug?

At the moment, Nome II does not have any MIDI-DIN input ports. You can use a MIDI hub or MIDI merger to do this.

LIVE USE

Live DJ concert with a crowd

Is Nome II suitable for Live usage?

Definitely, it was even designed for it! Where to start? Strong metal case, large knob, bright display, remote control, audio metronome, customisable, and more!

Can I use a pedal/footswitch?

Yes! Nome II will work with sustain pedals of any polarity, as well as latching footswitches. You can plug up to 2 pedals, controlling diverse functions

Can I use a guitar effect pedal?

Not to control Nome II like you would with a footswitch. But you can sync the effect pedal to Nome II if it accepts MIDI.

Can I tap the tempo on a pedal?

Yes, any sustain pedal (with any polarity) or guitar amp footswitch will work.

Can I tap the tempo on something else?

Yes, you can use the large “TAP” button, which almost feels like a pad. You can also use an electronic drum pad, or even a drum trigger. On these two you can tap a full bar with stronger taps on the downbeat, which will set tempo but also the time signature!

METRONOME

Can I change the volume and sound of the metronome?

Yes, there are 9 volume levels and 60 different click sounds. Both click and volume are adjustable for the downbeat (first beat of the bar).

Does the device blink at tempo?

Yes! The “TAP” button does.

Can I change the Time Signature?

Yes, any time signature in “x/4” is possible. Other time signatures and more advanced metronome beats are expected in a future firmware update.

Can I send the metronome to my In-Ear Monitor rack?

Absolutely! The audio output has a “balanced” mode which works with a balanced input of a mixer or audio interface.

I don't need a metronome, just a MIDI clock

That’s fine, you can simply ignore it. Note that the Play function will be default start your sequencers on the next bar (but it’s customizable).

While setting up the device, in particular when syncing to a DAW, it’s always a great idea to listen to the metronome as it gives you an idea if the device’s time.
